Start with the measurement
B&W field tile turns up in our 4 3/16" group. Measure the face to the nearest 1/16" — a tile that reads 4 3/16" rather than a true 4 1/4" immediately narrows the maker list, and B&W is one of the names on it.
Check the back
A loose piece is worth more than ten photos of the face. Backstamps, rib patterns and body color separate B&W from other California makers producing similar sizes and glazes.
Match the trim profile, not just the color
Most B&W jobs we see need trim: bullnose, cove base, curbs and V-caps for counters. Profiles differ between manufacturers, so shape is often the fastest confirmation.
Expect many shades of one color
A single B&W color name can exist in dozens of shades across production runs. Sheen and shading don't read reliably in photographs, so an exact match needs a mailed sample.
